We are all familiar with the great room in a home.
It’s usually the place where you and your family gather to watch TV or talk about your week. It’s where some of the most important “family time” happens.
But, have you ever considered moving the conversation and entertainment outdoors?
Many families across the US are creating outdoor great rooms by adding a pergola to their backyard patio.
While this is not a novel idea (people have installed pergolas on their properties for years) most people now are doing that in conjunction with pavers or an electrical package for their decks.
This combination often leads to an area where the family can enjoy the creature comforts of home along with the many creatures of nature- right in their own backyard.
Add in new, comfortable outdoor furniture, and suddenly you may find yourself spending more time outdoors than you ever had before.
The initial reaction to ideas like that for residents of Florida is usually some variation of, “Yeah. That sounds great. But it’s still too hot outside to simply sit under a pergola and relax!”
Enter the sunshade.
Adding a Sunshade To Your Outdoor Great Room Pergola
At the Hitching Post, we offer our pergolas with a sunshade option that allows you to control the amount of shade you get based on whether the shade is open or closed across the top of the pergola.
The pergola cover works on a track system that can either be automated or hand operated. It is made of marine grade fabric, available in over 400 different colors and is practically waterproof.
Not only that, we install the sunshade pergola cover at a slight one-inch angle or pitch towards one side. This allows water to run off to one predetermined side rather than pool in the middle.
Shade from the sun and shelter from afternoon rain showers…it’s the best of both worlds.
Planning, Designing and Building Your Outdoor Great Room
When planning your new pergola or outdoor great room, here are a few words that are important to keep on your mind…
Consider the total area of your backyard and choose a pergola to start your great room that will not be too obtrusive or take up too much of your landscape and “green space.”
Ask yourself how you want the area to function. Is it supposed to be more like your living room with areas for electronics and entertainment? Do you want an area like your den for quiet, calm relaxation and reflection? Or do you want an area like your kitchen, with a grill/outdoor stove, cabinets and countertop?
When we hear architects and designers talk about the flow of an outdoor living space, we understand that they are likely referring to how well the outdoor area combines with the indoors to create a cohesive “flow” through the home. Consider the color and design choices you have made in the interior and try to match them with the exterior of your new outdoor room.
When taking into consideration all of the above factors, the addition of your new outdoor great room will be more of an experience than just a simple collection of wood, brick or stone. It will help enhance the way you experience the outdoors right outside of your home.
That’s a pretty good way to live the outdoor lifestyle we are afforded here in Florida.
