“Avast, me hearties!”
A child’s imagination never quits, does it?
As parents, you know that just as soon as you think you’ve seen or heard everything that your child could possibly say or do, another second goes by and, well…there’s another new one liner or pretend moment you never saw coming.
In recent years, and in particular the last year or so, many playset designers and suppliers have started to tailor products to children’s imaginations.
Pirate ship playsets, locomotive playsets, castle playsets…specialty swing set forts of all kinds are popping up in backyards all over South Florida.
The popularity of pirate ship playsets in Miami, Broward and Palm Beach counties is rising. And this trend has helped spur more interest in choo-choo trains and castle swing sets too.
We put together a little information on some of the most popular models and what to look for before purchasing a specialty playset.
Will My Child Use This Specialty Swing Set Fort For A While, Or Is This Just A Phase?
It’s a question you have to ask yourself before making a purchase of a pirate ship playset or other specialty swing set.
What parents sometimes don’t realize is that no matter what the structure, kids imaginations will make it work. Today, they are using the pirate ship playset to be a pirate, and tomorrow they are fishermen or captain of their own cruise ship.
Today your castle playset is home to a princess and the next it’s the fort that guards your house.
A choo-choo train is only a choo-choo train as long as your child sees it that way. Who knows…tomorrow it may be a spaceship.
A child’s imagination knows no limits. Kids are always going to change their minds…parents are usually just playing catch-up.
How Do I Know If I Have Enough Backyard Space For A Specialty Playset?
There is no real “golden rule” when it comes to the land management of your backyard. But, first and foremost, stay within your lot lines and setbacks. Now, pretend you are your child and use your imagination!
Take a good long look at your yard and consider where you would put your specialty playset. Where do you want to “drop anchor” on a pirate ship swing set or lower the drawbridge of your child’s castle playset fort? Is it close to your home to allow for easier supervision or somewhere off to the side near the shade of a tree?
Those are all questions that you can and should take into consideration before you purchase a specialty playset. Most playsets that you can research online will have the dimensions of their overall footprint listed.
Make sure to check out and measure your chosen area before you make your purchase. Also, make sure you measure to include a 4’ Safe-Play-Zone around the area of the playset.
Consider The Construction of Your Playset; Choose Your Pirate Swing Set Shipbuilder Wisely
With so many playset companies to choose from, it’s hard to know what is the best one for your children.
Consider the manufacturer. Is it made in the US or overseas where sometimes construction guidelines can be lax?
Most will tell you that Amish woodworkers and craftsmen make the best wooden playsets regardless of design.
Also look for something that has a manufacturer’s warranty and research the longevity of that manufacturer.
Throw Out The Questions
The purchase of a specialty playset is something you should put thought into, no doubt. But, first and foremost, it is something you are only considering because you believe it will make your children happy.
That is obviously the most important aspect of your decision.
Sure, your kids’ tastes and interests will vary over the years. Certainly, their interests will wane…if it’s pirates or castles or trains, or whatever.
The main reason parents choose a niche or specialty playset is because it is a gift. It’s a gift you give to your kids because you want them to be happy and enjoy their childhood.
For whatever time and usage they get out of their special swing set, it will be something they will remember for years.
It’s probably not hard to for you to remember what it was like when you were a child and your parents did something for you that made your “pretend time” seem more real.
It’s also probably not hard to imagine your children looking back on their childhood memories fondly when they think of the time they got to be a pirate or princess or choo-choo train conductor / astronaut for real…right in their own backyard.
